2009 Fashion Scene According to Google

Google Insights for Search is a very cool little tool from the clever folks over at Google. It allows you to enter a number of different search terms and get a general idea of what the standout trends have been over a specified period of time. Obviously, for us this meant plugging in various fashion related words to see what would happen!

Fashion Designers

Firstly, we compared 5 well known fashion designers: Gucci, Vuitton, Prada, Burberry and Armani. If you click into the various sub-categories to get to UK results for the "Clothing Labels & Designers" section, this is the table that you get:

The big story from this table is the performance of Burberry - their 2009 was a superb year, including a strong comeback at London Fashion Week. Three of the other designers (Prada, Gucci and Armani) had stable but unremarkable 2009. What is at first rather surprising is the poor looking performance of Luis Vuitton - however, all if we look at the "Growth relative to category tab" a different story emerges, Vuitton is actually growing far faster than any of the other brands.

Another interesting chart is to have a look at how some of our biggest retail names are performing. Here we took Topshop, Next, River Island, Asos and H&M and this is what we saw:

What strikes you from this chart is the huge boost in growth for H&M towards the end of 2009 - this is in line with the Jimmy Choo range announcement and release. The success of this style of collaboration means that we will be seeing alot more of designers getting into mainstream shelves in 2010.

We will be keeping a close eye on each of these charts throughout 2010.

Chatting about the Addington races

I’m getting paranoid importing from YouTube because of the tags they introduce, and tags might be one of the reasons it takes me hours to get a compose screen on Vox. However, this one came up on demand, which is a relief.
I showed this to my neighbourhood yesterday, but as the YouTube one is public, I have no problems sharing it more widely. It was my TV appearance last month on CTV, with Angela and Megan on Good Living. This was not networked, but it was very fun to do. The set reminded me a bit of the Good Morning one at Avalon, except I got one thing that I was promised but never got: a subtitle with both my and Lucire’s names.

Top Five Women's Bags for Xmas 2009

Its the last week in November and the madness of the Christmas Shopping season is just around the corner (although in reality its been going on for a few weeks now thanks to some over-enthusiastic retail chains). As always, there will be a few tricky people to buy a present for, probably the same ones that you struggle with every year - bah humbug.

However, If you're looking for a gift option for the woman that has everything then you can never really go wrong with a good bag. There are a vast range of women's bags out there, which is both a blessing and a curse. One of the most difficult aspects of Christmas shopping is actually making that final purchasing decision, we've all been there with the doubt swirling around our minds: 'i like it, but will she like that colour!?' - not a very pleasant feeling.

We thought that we would try and help a little by outlining five bags which we think anyone would love. We've included options from the cheap and cheerful end of the scale to some slightly higher budget bags. We hope that you agree with some of our choices.

Peacocks - The prices are so decent on the Peacocks website that you could probably buy 2 or 3 bags from Peacocks. However, we especially like their chic and cheerful range of Clutch Bags, which at £6 are great value.

M&S - Marks and Spencer always have a solid range of bags and this year is no exception, they are well made and excellent value for money - we like this cross shoulder bag which comes in a t £39.95.

AllSaints - Fashionistas love AllSaints for their edgy designs and high quality fabrics, their bags this year exemplify this output. This Zeena Bag is one of the cheaper options (£120) that they offer but it is still very cool.

Jigsaw - A High Street favourite in the UK for a number of years now, Jigsaw retain an aura of quality and elegance, combined with a great design sense - this Tote Bag is a great example (£159)

Hermes - No we are getting serious. You know that you are dealing with a quailty bit of gear when the cheapest bag on offer is a purse that costs over £500! A bag from Hermes however should be seen as an investment - our cost-is-no-barrier option would be this Garden Party Bag, which only costs £1560.

Anyway, incase you weren't aware former Indie-Goddess turned Uber-Designer Pearl Lowe has designed an exclusive range of dresses for UK clothes retailer Peacocks.The good news is that they are very cool indeed, the not so good news is that they are selling out fast! Garment Center Rally Support

Thank you to everybody who came to the Save the Garment Center Rally on Wednesday. It was a huge success with over 750 supporters showing up and letting their voices be heard. Among the many supporters were designers Yeohlee Teng, Michael Kors, Elie Tahari, Diane von Furstenberg, and, of course, the event organizer Nanette Lepore. Many people shared moving stories on what the Garment Center has meant to them and their businesses. One key point Nanette made, “If there is one thing that we should have clearly learned this year.…We cannot base New York City’s entire economy on two industries: Wall Street and real estate. Those industries are important — those people wear clothes…But we need a diversified economy in New York City, so when there is a Wall Street setback it doesn’t become a massive problem in our city.”

Mayoral candidate Bill Thompson gave a strong speech, making it clear that unlike his competitor, Mayor Bloomberg, he believes in the Garment Center and the Made in NYC label. He promised, “As mayor, I’ll work with manufacturers, the fashion industry, and labor unions to arrange for up to one million square feet of dedicated garment manufacturing space in nonprofit buildings.” The labor unions showed up as well, with many cutters and sewers from the Workers United group proudly holding their Sew NY signs.

Christian Louboutin flats

We all have got used to see celebs wearing Louboutin’s shoes with a signature red sole and extremely high stilletto heel on the red carpet. However wearing those in everyday life can be much more complicated. Victoria Beckham can do this, as for others I doubt they can be as graceful and elegant.

2009 Emmy Awards - 10 best dressed

Last night was the night of TV glam. The 61st Emmy Awards were held yesterday at the Nokia Theatre. The TV equivalent to the Oscars gathered together your fave TV actors and actresses as well as TV show hosts and just beautiful A-listers and socialites to celebrate the best shows, actors and directors this year.

Project Runway host Heidi Klum showed her beautiful pregnancy style in a custom-made black strapless lace gown with embroidered bodice by Marchesa. Her enormous baby bump was really hard to hide. The model is due this fall.

We have allready told you about Naomi Campbell’s indignation with the fact black models are not given jobs during the crisis. And now photographer Nick Knight continues the topic. He says the fashion industry is racist.

Nick claims fashion focuses more on white models, and many industry professionals feel reluctant to work with black beauties.

Emma Watson designs with People Tree

Though she said No to personal fashion line claiming she wasn’t “interested in doing it for my own ego”, Harry Potter star and the highest grossing lead actress of the decade, Emma Watson added she would willingly design a line if it was “beneficial to a cause”, and looks like she’s found the cause she was looking for!

Emma Watson will launch her first Spring/Summer 2010 designer collection next February!
